“Another Simple Favor”: Lorenzo Sisti/Prime Video

NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • We published three new interviews this week: director Hala Matar talked about Maria Bakalova-starrer “Electra,” which will be available on digital platforms and open May 2 in select theaters following April 27 and April 28 screenings at the Roxy in NYC; filmmaker Constance Tsang shared insight into her film “Blue Sun Palace,” - now in theaters - set in NYC’s Chinese communities; and Georgian filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili opened up about the difficulties of making her new feature “April” in secret to avoid detection by local authorities.

  • The Cannes Film Festival has announced a fresh round of titles that will feature at its 78th edition next month - among them are Lynne Ramsay’s latest “Die, My Love,” a dark comedy thriller about a woman who develops severe postpartum depression, and Kristen Stewart’s long-awaited directorial feature debut “The Chronology of Water,” a tale of turning trauma into art adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s best-selling 2011 memoir of the same name. The former will play in the main competition, while Stewart’s film has been selected for Un Certain Regard. The fest will run from May 13 to May 24.

  • Elsewhere, Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” adaptation for Focus Features - which she co-wrote with the novel’s author, Maggie O’Farrell - has been bestowed a limited Thanksgiving release of November 27 before it is set to open wide on December 12; Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel is set for a July 18 theatrical release; and Netflix has finally shared news and first-look photos of “The Old Guard 2,” the delayed follow-up to Gina Prince-Bythewood’s 2020 action-adventure flick, which sees Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne return, newly joined by Uma Thurman, and with director Victoria Mahoney at the helm - it will land on the streamer July 2.
