NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
Gillian Anderson and “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder are set to lead “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” the latest feature from filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun (“I Saw the TV Glow”). Schoenbrun described their new metatextual project - in which a fictional slasher franchise is rebooted - as “my best attempt at the ‘sleepover classic’,” explaining that they “make movies I wish existed when I was a kid.” With Mubi on board to distribute, the film is expected to go into production in British Columbia this summer.
Cinematographer and director Rachel Morrison (“The Fire Inside,” “Black Panther”) has a new feature lined up, with Deadline now exlusively revealing that Margaret Qualley has joined the pic, titled “Love of Your Life.” Details are currently light regarding the script, which was penned by Julia Cox (“Nyad”), and sold last October after an intense bidding war. Elsewhere, hot off the heels of her turn in last year’s “The Substance,” Qualley has reteamed with her “Drive-Away Dolls” director Ethan Coen for dark comedy “Honey Don’t!,” in which she stars opposite Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans - you can see it in theaters from August 22.
Trailer watch: Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne return as Andy and Nile respectively in Netflix’s “The Old Guard 2” - the former now grappling with her newfound mortality as they and their crew of immortal mercenaries prepare to face a new mysterious threat presented by Uma Thurman’s addition to the cast. Victoria Mahoney directs this sequel to the popular action movie that dropped in 2020; Sarah L. Walker and Greg Rucka penned the script - the franchise is based on the graphic novel series of the same name from Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez. Catch the movie on the streamer from July 2.
And in case you missed them, we published two more interviews this week: with Rachel Feldman, director and co-writer of Lilly Ledbetter biopic “Lilly,” and with Yael Melamede, director of documentary “ADA: My Mother The Architect,” about architect Ada Karmi Melamede, the filmmaker’s mother. Both films are now in theaters.
