There are a couple of films that have lodged into my bones over the last several months. First there is The Zone of Interest directed by Jonathan Glazer. That movie was a mind blowing completely different Holocaust movie, and I’m not sure I can ever watch it again. I recently saw American Fiction written and directed by Cord Jefferson, and wow, that movie blew me away. It was so, so smart in how it dealt with race and was super funny and just terrific. Jeffrey Wright should get all the awards. He was so great as was the full cast.
But I don’t think there is another film that I have recently seen that affected me as much as Origin written and directed by Ava DuVernay. What she was able to accomplish in taking a non-fiction, almost academic, book and make it into this beautiful story of love, loss and an investigation into caste was a spectacular achievement.
Ava Duvernay joined me for a short interview on the film.

Please see this film. You will cry. You will be moved.
